Bette Bates

Bette Bates currently lives in Black Mountain, North Carolina and is originally from Columbia, Missouri. She received her BFA from Stephens College and MFA in Printmaking from East Carolina University. Bette taught drawing and printmaking at Warren Wilson College until 2018, when she retired. She is the recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Visual Artist Fellowship, an Artist Project Grant from the Asheville Area Arts Council, and a Ucross Foundation Residency Grant. She is inspired by any and all printmaking and drawing processes, by feeling a partnership with the materials used, and by the power of images to affect our lives. Her work explores the idea of Eve, the ambivalence of masks, the process of voting, and she has long been interested in exploring the use of non-toxic and alternative materials.
